How long do I need to wait before I collect my prescription?

Non Dispensing Patients

You collect your drugs from a chemist shop eg The Pharmacy at either surgery or a High Street pharmacy.

Please allow 4 working days

This means that, for example, a request submitted after 09:00 on Monday should be ready from 16:00 on Friday and an online request submitted after 18:30 on Friday will also not be ready until after 16:00 on Friday (Normal working days are Monday to Friday excluding Bank Holidays).

Dispensing Patients

You collect your drugs from the Dispensary at your surgery.

Please allow 2 working days.

This means that, for example, a request submitted after 09:00 on Monday should be ready from 16:00 on  Wednesday and an online request submitted after 18:30 on Friday will also not be ready until after 16:00 on Wednesday (Normal working days are Monday to Friday excluding Bank Holidays).

If you are a Morland Patient and wish to collect medicines at Holmwood, then you must place your order at Holmwood and vice versa.  Please be aware that other independent pharmacies have their own time targets.

Both dispensaries close between 13:00 and 14:00.

You can usually obtain medicines from the dispensary if you live more than a mile ("as the crow flies") from a chemist, you are a temporary resident or you are unable to get to a chemist shop easily.  Ask at the dispensary for details.

What is the difference between Dispensary and Pharmacy?

The pharmacy located at each surgery is owned and run by a company called  H M McParland Ltd who operate in a similar way to any other pharmacy on the high street.

The dispensaries are a department within the Practice in the same way that reception, the secretaries and nursing team are – all working under the direction of the GPs.

NHS Charges

These charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.

  • Prescription (per item): £9.00
  • 12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £104.00
  • 3-month PPC: £29.10

If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months or more than 14 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC.

Prescription Fees

Help with NHS costs

In England, around 90% of prescription items are dispensed free. This includes exemptions from charging for those on low incomes, such as:

  • those on specific benefits or through the NHS Low Income Scheme
  • those who are age exempt
  • those with certain medical conditions
  • More information is available at NHS Choices
